Jan's program is based on the Orff Schulwerk, a
program for musical education devised by German composer, Carl Orff.
Children create and enjoy music in groups, actively participating in
a process that motivates and excites them about the joy of music.
The
elements of music, pitch, timbre, dynamics, duration, tempo, form, colour
and texture are explored daily. Children participate in speech,
singing, movement, use of instruments, notation and theory development.
Jan's program is creative, ever changing and fascinating to children,
being based on their own interests and the events and seasons of their
young lives. The transition
to private lessons for students from Jan's program is easy.
Above
all, the program builds a lifelong love of music and the confidence to
express this love through participation in musical experience. What
greater gift could be given to a child?
Jan Harvey currently offers both music and music/art
classes. Weekly lessons are 45 minutes long, with caregivers joining
in for the final five minutes. Jan provides a folder and duotang
for each child which is filled with musical lessons and exercises over
the course of the year.
There are two semesters in Jan's
teaching year: September through December, and February through May.
She has found that taking a break in January is great for both families
and teachers alike.
Music Classes
