Music & Movement for Children

The Magic of MusicJan's program is based on the Orff Schulwerk, a program for musical education devised by a German composer, Carl Orff. Children create and enjoy music in groups, actively participating in a process that motivates and excites them about the joy of music. The elements of music, pitch, timbre, dynamics, duration, tempo, form, colour and texture are explored daily. Children participate in speech, singing, movement, use of instruments, notation and theory development. Jan's program is creative, ever changing and fascination to children, being based on their own interests and the events and seasons of their young lives. Keyboard classes refine and develop musical knowledge and skill, and the transition to private lessons for students from Jan's program is easy. Above all, the program builds a lifelong love of music and the confidence to express this love through participation in musical experience. What greater gift could be given to a child? Jan Harvey taught primary grades in the public schools, using the power of music to enhance instruction in all her subjects. Twenty-five years ago she began a new career in music education beginning with six four year olds in one class. After completing training at the University of British Columbia and the Royal Conservatory of Music, Jan began to refine and develop a unique program for three to seven year olds. The program begins with the music basics and culminates with group keyboard classes. Her program and her loving, dynamic and positive style have ensured the success for thousands of children in future musical training. Now with two hundred children enrolled in her programs each year and a long waiting list, Jan is acknowledged to be the best in her field. Jan continues to learn and create new material on a sound theoretical basis. Her goal is to motivate and develop the love of music in children. Jan has three grown children and a variety of interests and hobbies including winter sports, fitness, crafts, reading and hiking.
